Handmade Books
I discovered the simple sewn technique of Japanese stab binding with rudimentary tools as a way to sew etchings into a book years ago. Making paper and brushes by hand grew from a purist sensibility to take my materials back to their origins. Crafting objects became a regular activity in my studio practice to take a break between paintings, regroup and quiet my senses. The meditative process of measuring, tearing paper, cutting covers, curating papers, sewing and gluing has become a studio mantra. Most cover materials are scavenged with a history of travel and prior use. Each completed book of blank pages is a unique, silent collaboration for someone to cherish and fill.
